Here you might have a problem... If the cards are not identical, even for 
good-functioning cards, you will probably see differences in timing of 
sending and receiving packets which will lower the overall performance of 
the "cluster". I haven't heard of such clusters, normally the 
desktop computers are taken from a lab where all computers were bought at 
the same time and thus have identical hardware...
I think that in your case the only solution is to invest some money in 
some good network cards for all the computers that will be used in the 
cluster.
